George Goldfarb named Business Person of Year

The chief operating officer of the clothing seller Maurices was honored on Wednesday as Duluth’s Business Person of the Year.

George Goldfarb, who is also executive vice president of the company, became chief operating officer in 2009 after seven years as senior vice president and chief financial officer.

The award, along with five entrepreneurial success awards and two recognition awards, was announced during the 18th annual Joel Labovitz Entrepreneurial Success Awards luncheon.

Goldfarb , who has been associated with Maurices for more than 20 years, oversees finance and accounting, real estate, store design, facilities, logistics and purchasing, and also has management responsibility for information technology, store operations and human resources.

Goldfarb worked in public accounting before joining Maurices. He holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Minnesota Duluth.

The award, in its 40th year, honors a person “who is a leader in business and whose actions have demonstrated ethics, integrity, contributions to the community, effective business practices, and can serve as a role model for our students,”according to a news release from the UMD Labovitz School of Business and Economics.

The Entrepreneurial Success Awards are sponsored by UMD’s Center for Economic Development. Recipients were chosen from 29 nominees from the Twin Ports and the Arrowhead region.

They are:

-- Emerging Entrepreneur: Dynamic Structural Steel — Jason Erickson, Proctor

-- Established Entrepreneur: Dockside Fish Market of Grand Marais — Shele and Harley Toftey, Grand Marais

-- Mature Entrepreneur: Disability Specialists Inc. — Tom Ehrbright, Cook

-- Innovation: S-O-S Inc. On Line Leak Sealing — Jim Carter, Duluth

Recognition awards were presented to:

-- Entrepreneurial Leadership: Sandford C. Hoff
